How Is Lyme Disease Treated?
Once it has been properly diagnosed, or if your doctor – having listened to your explanation and travel / activity history – is satisfied that you are suffering from Lyme disease, the most likely next step is for them to prescribe a course of antibiotics.
The nature of the antibiotics prescribed will depend on the symptoms and their severity:
For those in the early stages (stage 1 or 2) the most likely medications to be used for adults and children over 8 years old are Doxycycline, whereas younger children or mothers who are nursing or breastfeeding are more likely to be prescribed Ceruroxime or Amoxicillin. These can be taken orally in tablet form and are usually prescribed to be taken for 28 days. It is critical that with any antibiotics that you complete the course as prescribed by your doctor. Sometimes it can take a long time for the infection to come under control and it may not feel as if your making any progress, but if the full course antibiotics are not taken, it increases the risk of building immunity to them, negating their use in other infectious situations.
For those suffering with more challenging symptoms or for those whose symptoms have not been noticed or dealt with until the disease has reached stage 3, the antibiotics prescribed might be significantly stronger, and in many cases will be administered intravenously while in the care of a hospital or medical practice.
Whether you catch the disease in stage 1, 2 or 3, the course of antibiotics may well have been finished well before you start to feel any better. This is because although antibiotics eliminate the infection, it can take a longer time for the symptoms to dissipate or disappear. It is unknown why certain symptoms such as joint pain continue long after the bacteria has been destroyed, but some doctors believe that persistent symptoms can occur in people who are more prone to autoimmune disease.
